Gold, Frankinsence & Myrrh bobbie-marquis
by Bobbie Marquis

I love stories.  And at Christmas time, there are so many great stories on which to reflect.

One of my favorites is O. Henry's, "The Gift of the Magi".   In this ironic tale of giving, which was written in 1906, a young couple, Jim and Della Dillingham, are struggling financially, yet very much in love.   Jim sells his prized pocket watch in order to buy Della a set of combs for her long, beautiful hair.  And Della, sells her luscious locks to a wig-maker in order to buy a watch fob for Jim's treasured pocket watch.  As they discover the irony, it is apparent that each knows that their love is the true gift.

Of course we know that the original "Gifts of the Magi" were gold, frankincense and myrrh.  The magi followed the star, and delivered these treasures to a manger in Bethlehem, where a swaddled babe lay.  This of course is the greatest Christmas story:  The Nativity.   tomie-depaola-first-christmas

When my sons were children, each year I pulled out the colorful pop-up book by Tomie dePaola and read them "The First Christmas" in three dimensions.  For a few precious moments, they stopped thinking about the action figures and Transformers on their list for Santa, as they gazed transfixed at the ancient images.

As we enter the holiday season, I'd like to wish you all a very happy and peaceful time.  Enjoy the traditional stories, create new stories, and in the midst of the lights, the music, the parties, and the hustle and bustle, I wish you a new treasure trove of crystal memories.    Whatever your religion, enjoy your traditions and as you take time to pray and to ponder their deeper meaning, may you receive life's most blessed gifts.
