President's Report March 2011

syd-and-her-catWomen in History

Dr. Minne Miles was a soft-spoken, determined, influential leader, humanitarian and teacher who affected the lives of decades of students, citizens, and women nationally and internationally, according to the University of Alabama's Board of Trustees on her 90th birthday celebration in 2000.

Dr. Miles began her lifetime of service to the University of Alabama in 1942 as an instructor in the College of Business Award and was named Professor Emeriti of Organizational Behavior prior to her retirement in 1978.

In 1963, she stood at President John F. Kennedy's left shoulder as he signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963 because of her tireless determined efforts.  Her impact was significant in these early efforts to contribute to equality in the workplace for women across the nation, serving on the US Civil Service Commission, NASA, Federal Aviation Administration, the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Marshall Flight Space Center

The lives of literally millions of Americans were touched by

Dr. Minne Miles because of courageous and determined efforts to break through gender barriers.  Her perseverance in pursuing her own education allowed her to break down barriers and exert leadership to make a difference in many lives.  How can you have a positive influence on even one woman since March is Women's History Month and an opportunity to truly make a difference?
